Doctor Alicia Kowaltowski
Graduated in Medicine at the State University of Campinas (1997), PhD in Medical Sciences at the State University of Campinas (1999) and post-doctorate at Oregon Graduate Institute. She is currently professor of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of São Paulo. Her work is focused in bioenergetic, transport and mitochondrial redox state areas. Dr Alicia group studies the mechanisms through which mitochondria controls cellular and animal survival. They also study how aging and age-related disease, including heart attack, can be affected by mitochondrial function. Reactive oxygen species generated by mitochondria are one of the causes of aging, and are generated at levels which can be altered by different diets. Their goal is to uncover the relationship between diets, mitochondrial ROS generation and aging.
